Wiki/Build a Baller/GOAT ranking

How the GOAT ranking works: what the all-time board sorts by, the three scopes, and what #1 actually takes

"Platz #6 im GOAT-Ranking," wrote a German forum poster about his 102-OVR build. Here is exactly what that number means.

The short version

  • The GOAT ranking is the all-time board sorted by OVR, highest first. Ties go to whoever posted first.
  • Three scopes on Ranks: ๐ŸŒ All-time (every build ever), ๐Ÿ“… Today (posted today, UTC), ๐ŸŽฏ Daily Challenge (the shared-seed board, one attempt per player).
  • The #1 build is crowned All-time GOAT, Today's Leader, or Today's Daily Challenge Leader; yesterday's #1 is carried as Yesterday's Champion.
  • You can re-sort any board by Points, Rebounds, Assists, Win Shares, Rings or MVPs. Those sorts rank careers, not builds.
  • Nearly 500,000 Build a Baller builds have been posted. The all-time #1 is a 116.

What the board sorts by

By default every Build a Baller board is ordered by the build's OVR, highest first. When two builds have the same OVR the one posted earlier ranks higher, so a 116 posted in July stays above a 116 posted today. There is no hidden weighting, no bonus for legends or Primes, and career results do not affect the default rank: a 116 that retired in the Hall of Not Good outranks a 110 with four rings.

The board shows the top 200 and pins your own exact rank underneath even if you are outside them. Tap any row to expand the full build: all nine slots, the player headshots and each slot value, colored by tier (common, bronze, silver, gold, diamond).

The three scopes

ScopeWhat it contains#1 is called
๐ŸŒ All-timeEvery build ever posted, no time filterAll-time GOAT
๐Ÿ“… TodayBuilds posted since midnight UTC, free play includedToday's Leader (and yesterday's #1 is shown as Yesterday's Champion)
๐ŸŽฏ Daily ChallengeOnly the day's seeded daily runs, one per playerToday's Daily Challenge Leader

The daily board is the fairest of the three: everyone had the same cards, and the server accepts exactly one entry per player per day (a second submit is ignored and just reports your original rank). Basketball's daily runs every day of the year.

The career sorts

The sort menu offers OVR, Points, Rebounds, Assists, Win Shares, Rings, MVPs, each with a Best / Worst direction. Switching to a career sort turns the board into a ranking of simulated careers rather than builds: the Rings sort surfaces the dynasty builds, the Points sort the volume scorers. Because the sim is deterministic, those totals are permanent facts about each build.

What #1 takes

As of August 2026 the all-time #1 is a 116, and the entire top 60 is between 111 and 116. Getting there means landing the same handful of players (see the best builds page): two legend bigs in Frame and Rebounding, Curry in 3-Pointer, Kyrie in Dribble, Wembanyama in Defense. On the Today board, a high-90s to low-100s build usually leads by evening; the daily board leader is often lower, since the seeded reel decides the ceiling for everyone.

Leaderboard versus All-Time Standing

These are two different things and people mix them up:

  • The leaderboard compares your build to other players' builds. Your rank is a position among real people.
  • The All-Time Standing shown after a career sim compares your hooper's career to a curated list of 100 real NBA greats, using a legacy score (Win Shares, MVPs, rings, Finals MVPs, All-NBA selections, scoring titles, DPOYs, points, and a Hall of Fame bonus). "#14 all-time" there means your career slots in above the 14th name on that list; it says nothing about other players' builds.

Why a build might not appear

Boards only keep builds that pass validation against the live player data. A build made from a modified page, or one whose slot values do not match any real card, is dropped. If you are playing normally you will never see this.

Other boards on the Ranks page

  • Every other GoatLab game has the same three scopes and the same crown labels; the sort options change per sport.
  • The โš”๏ธ 1v1 Elo tab ranks Face Off players by rating, with the leader shown as #1 Ranked Player. It is entirely separate from the build boards.

Questions people ask

What is the GOAT ranking in GoatLab?

The all-time leaderboard for a game, sorted by build OVR with ties going to the earliest post. Being #6 means the sixth-highest OVR ever posted in that game.

Does a good career help my leaderboard rank?

Not on the default board, which sorts by OVR only. Career stats only matter when you switch the sort to Points, Rebounds, Assists, Win Shares, Rings or MVPs.

How are ties broken on the GoatLab leaderboard?

By post time: the build posted first ranks higher.

What is the highest OVR on the Build a Baller leaderboard?

116, as of August 2026, out of nearly 500,000 builds posted.

What does "Yesterday's Champion" mean?

The build that finished #1 on yesterday's Today board. It is shown next to today's leader on the Ranks page.
