1v1 Face Off: the 120-second build duel, what decides it, Elo and ranked seasons, ghosts and challenges

Face Off is GoatLab against a real person: both of you spin and build on a two-minute clock, then the higher overall wins. Everything else, from the at-bat animation to the Elo ladder, is built around that one rule.

Updated 2026-08-25Source: game codeOfficial

The short version

  • Higher build OVR wins. Ties go to a seeded coin flip that both screens see identically.
  • 120-second shot clock; when it hits zero the open slots auto-fill, so nobody can stall.
  • Quick-build uses the normal power-ups (one Re-spin, one Snag left/right, one Boost) and excludes grey cards: every landed player is 65 OVR or better.
  • Ranked is always Classic. Legends Only and Hard Mode are friendly modes.
  • Elo starts at 1000, K = 32, plus +2 per consecutive win up to a 5-streak. Guests are rated under their handle. Baseball and soccer run monthly ranked seasons with 5 placement games.
  • No opponent in ~20 seconds? Face a ghost: a real recent build from the leaderboard. Elo still counts.

The flow

  1. Press search. You are paired with the next player searching in that sport; if nobody comes in about 20 seconds you are offered ๐Ÿ‘ป Face a Ghost.
  2. Roles are assigned at random (pitcher vs batter, striker vs keeper, and so on; see per-sport formats below).
  3. Both players quick-build on a shared 2:00 shot clock. Whoever finishes first waits in the arena watching the other side's progress bar. A 75-second no-show ends as No Contest with no rating change.
  4. The result plays out (an at-bat, a game to 11, a shootout) and the higher OVR wins. Ties are a seeded coin.
  5. Elo updates, and the ๐Ÿ“Š Stats screen shows your rating, worldwide rank, record and the Top Players board.

Quick-build rules

  • Same reel and slots as the sport's normal builder, with the grey tier removed: the pool is filtered to 65 OVR and up, so every spin is at least bronze.
  • One Re-spin, one Snag (โ—„ or โ–บ, one use between them), one Boost to the player's Prime card. Boost is unavailable in Legends Only.
  • Every open slot previews the landed player's rating before you commit.
  • At 0:00 any open slot auto-fills. A half-finished build is a low build; commit fast and spend the clock reading neighbors for Snag.

What decides it, sport by sport

ModeRolesPresentation
BaseballOne pitcher, one batter (random)A seeded at-bat plays on both phones; higher OVR wins the at-bat.
BasketballTwo hoopersFirst to 11, half-court 1-on-1, scripted possession by possession. The bigger the OVR gap, the lower the loser's score: about 9 if the gap is 1, down to a shutout past 14.
SoccerOne striker, one keeperPenalty shootout; the higher overall wins it.
College FootballBoth build the same position, your choice of QB, RB or WRHead-to-head overall, no role asymmetry.

Modes

  • โš”๏ธ Classic: the standard draft, all tiers above grey. Ranked matchmaking is always Classic.
  • ๐ŸŸฃ Legends Only (soccer calls it Icons Only): only purple legend cards on the reel. Friendly.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Hard Mode: ratings hidden while you build. Friendly.

Elo, streaks and seasons

  • Everyone starts at 1000. Standard Elo with K = 32; you update against your opponent's rating.
  • Streak bonus: +2 Elo per consecutive win, capped at a five-win streak (+10). A loss resets it.
  • Guests are rated. You pick a handle on your first match and it is the name on the ladder; no account needed. Sign in later and the record moves to your account if it has no games yet.
  • Ranked seasons (baseball and soccer): one UTC calendar month each, starting 15 July 2026. At rollover your rating is pulled halfway back toward 1000 and you play 5 placement games at K = 48 (no streak bonus during placements) to lock a rank. Tiers: Bronze, Silver (900+), Gold (1000+), Platinum (1100+), Diamond (1200+), and a purple Top 10.

Ghosts, lobbies and challenges

  • Ghost match: after about 20 seconds with no opponent, play a random recent real build from the leaderboard. Elo counts.
  • Meet lobby: a challenge sent from the friends panel creates a lobby link; both sides arrive in any order and are paired. Friendly, no Elo, three-minute no-show timeout.
  • Build challenge: the โš”๏ธ button on a profile's saved build starts a ghost match against that exact Hall of Fame build. Friendly, no Elo (so it cannot be farmed), and the owner gets a ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ held or ๐Ÿ’ฅ fell notification.

Balance note

In the first 23,000 baseball matches batters won about 53% because they built slightly higher on average (90.2 vs 89.6). The pitcher's Defense slot was re-curved for Face Off in July 2026 to close the gap, and it has been tuned since; treat any exact split as a snapshot, not a law.

Where the ladder shows

The Ranks page has a โš”๏ธ 1v1 Elo tab for each sport: the #1 Ranked Player with rating and record, the top 100, and your own rank pinned if you are outside it. The /versus#stats link in every game's menu opens your own stats screen.

Winning more Face Offs

  • Grey is gone, so the spread between a lucky and an unlucky reel is smaller than in solo play; the edge is in slot assignment. Put each card where its weight is highest, exactly as in the build tips.
  • Read the neighbors before every Re-spin. Snag is the only guaranteed upgrade in the mode.
  • Boost a live star in a heavy slot. In baseball Face Off the Boost cannot be used in Legends Only, so Classic is where it matters.
  • Finish early. The clock runs out for both of you, but a rushed last three slots is where most losses come from.

Questions people ask

How do you win a Face Off in GoatLab?

Finish the two-minute quick-build with a higher overall than your opponent. Ties are decided by a seeded coin flip that both players see identically.

How long is the Face Off shot clock?

120 seconds. When it expires, any open slots are filled automatically.

Can guests play ranked Face Off?

Yes. Guests pick a handle and are rated like everyone else; the record transfers to an account if you sign in later with no games on it.

What is a ghost match?

If no live opponent appears within about 20 seconds you can face a ghost: a random recent real build from the leaderboard. Your Elo still changes.

How is Face Off Elo calculated?

Standard Elo starting at 1000 with K = 32, plus a streak bonus of +2 per consecutive win up to five. Baseball and soccer add monthly ranked seasons with five placement games at K = 48.
