The short version
- Seven slots: PG, SG, SF, PF, C, a 6th man (counts 0.75) and a Coach (adds −5 to +5 straight onto your OVR).
- Reels run at a fixed 10 faces per second with no easing. STOP freezes everything; you lock exactly one player per stop. You get one mulligan (drop one locked player, respin that seat once).
- Each game of a series: win chance = 50% + 4% per point your Squad OVR beats the boss, plus momentum, home court and relics, clamped between 10% and 90%.
- Out-rate a boss by more than 7 and you cannot lose the series. That is the number to build toward before the finals.
- One life. The only save is 🛟 Insurance Policy ($125), which rewinds the game that killed you.
- Across all players, roughly 5% of runs beat all eight fights. Beating the four Overtime bosses after that (🌌 IMMORTAL) is under 1%.

What GOAT Squad is
Every roster spot spins at once like a slot machine full of real players (current stars and legends). You hit ⏹ STOP, the board freezes, you tap one player to lock him, the rest respin, and you repeat until seven seats are filled. Then your squad enters THE GAUNTLET: a ten-layer map of the best teams in history, each a best-of-seven series, ending with the 1996 Bulls and the 2016 Warriors. Win cap space between series, spend it in traveling shops, pick up relics that bend the odds. Lose one series and the run is over.
There are six editions (NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL, soccer, UFC). This guide covers the NBA edition in full and lists the differences at the end.
The draft: reels, STOP, and the mulligan
The seven slots
| Slot | Who can fill it | Weight in Squad OVR |
|---|---|---|
| PG, SG, SF, PF, C | Players at that position | 1.0 each |
| 6TH MAN | Any position | 0.75 (1.0 with the 🪑 Bench Warmer relic or the Bench Coach GM) |
| COACH | One of 36 named coaches | Not averaged: his mod (−5 to +5) is added straight onto the team number |
STOP is a skill, not a dice roll
The reels cycle at exactly 10 faces per second with no slow-down and no rubber-banding, and the STOP button fires the instant your finger touches it (on press, not release). The whole sequence for a run is pre-drawn, so what you see is what is there; the only variable is when you stop. Watch a reel for a couple of cycles, count the beat, and you can hit a specific face on purpose. Players who treat STOP as random draft 85s. Players who treat it as timing draft 95s.
After STOP, tap one player to lock him (a drag or scroll never locks; the tap has to land still). Everything else respins after a 400ms beat.
The mulligan
After your last lock you get one do-over: 👇 PICK ONE TO DROP, then that seat respins once and locks on your next STOP, ratings hidden until the reveal. It is your only free correction all run. Use it on the worst starter, not the 6th man (a starter counts 1.0; the bench seat 0.75). Banner IV and the Hard-Ass GM take the mulligan away.
The legend pity timer
In the Gauntlet (never in the daily), if you go 18 stops without a single legend frozen anywhere on the open board, the game forces one onto a random open position seat. If you are legend-hunting, that is the ceiling on your bad luck.
Squad OVR: what the number actually is
Squad OVR = the weighted average of your six players (6th man at 0.75) plus your coach's mod, plus any flat relic boosts (Team Chemistry, No Ringers, Dynasty and so on). It is deliberately not capped at 99; elite squads run past 100. This is the single number every series is decided by, so every decision in the run is "does this raise Squad OVR, or raise my odds some other way?"
The coach matters twice: his mod is worth real points, and his tier decides which Manager's Card you get. A +4 or +5 coach is worth far more than the number suggests.
How a series is decided (the actual formula)
Every series is best of seven, first to four, with a 2-2-1-1-1 home-court pattern that starts in the boss's building unless you own the 🏟️ Home Court Deed. Each game is one roll against this probability:
- 4% per OVR point. Match the boss exactly and every game is a coin flip. Beat him by 5 and each game is 70/30 in your favor, which over a best-of-seven is a very comfortable series.
- Momentum: 9% per game of deficit. Whoever trails plays desperate. Down 0-1 you get +9%, down 1-3 you get +18%. It cuts both ways: when you lead, the boss gets it. Relics like 🍀 Rabbit's Foot and the ⏱️ Timeout card stop it swinging against you; the 2013 Heat switch yours off entirely.
- Home edge: +3% in your building (Home Court Deed, or the 🔊 Sixth Man Crowd relic).
- The 3-1 comeback rule. Down 3-1 you get an extra +10%, and it is allowed to pierce the 90% cap up to 95%. If LeBron James is anywhere on your squad the bonus is +20% instead. The boss gets the same +10% when he is the one facing elimination, so the baseline stays a true 50/50.
- The blowout lock. If your displayed OVR beats the boss by more than 7, a Game 7 elimination loss cannot happen; the game is forced to a win. In practice: at +8 you are unlosable. This is the target number before the finals.
Some bosses carry a signature ability that edits this formula: the 1996 Bulls get +10% in elimination games, the 2016 Warriors +15% in Game 1, the 2013 Heat turn off your momentum, the 2016 Cavs get +25% when they are down 3-1, and the 2004 Pistons quietly subtract 1 from your OVR in the sim without showing it on the scoreboard. 🧿 The Antidote relic cancels whichever one you are facing.
One life, and the one way around it
Lose a series and the run resets: squad, cap space, relics, everything. The attempt is counted the moment it starts, so refreshing mid-series does not give you a second look. The only save is 🛟 Insurance Policy, $125 in the shop, one per run: it rewinds to the game that killed you and re-simulates the series from there. It is the most expensive item and, before the finals, the most important one.
The Gauntlet at a glance
Ten layers: eight fights and two shops. Every fight before the finals is a fork (two or three cities; you pick one). The last two fights never move: the 1996 Bulls (97) and then the 2016 Warriors (101). Everything before them is drawn each run from a large rotation pool, band-matched to the layer's difficulty, and two or three fork sides get flagged ⚠️ ELITE: +2 rating and a bonus ability, but their spoils wheel is 60% relics and their stars ride the wheel three times. The full ladder, every team and every ability is on the Gauntlet page.
Ratings climb roughly 75 → 80 → 85 → (shop) → 88-90 → 91-92 → 93-94 → (shop) → 97 → 101. Your squad has to climb with it: a fresh 88 draft is comfortable in layer 1 and dead by layer 6 unless the shops and relics carry it.
Cap space, in one paragraph
You earn $5 per game won (it ticks up live), +$15 for the series, +$10 for a sweep and +$20 for beating a higher-rated team. Holding cash earns interest of $1 per $5 held at each series win, capped at $10, which is why banking is a real decision and also why hoarding past $50 is pointless. Full prices and the bank-versus-spend math are on the shop page.
Relics, GMs, cards and banners
- Relics (up to 5) come off victory spoils wheels and the ✨ Relic Wheel. Early fights are relic-heavy (65% of wheel cards), the finals relic-light (35%). Rare and legendary relics are the ones that move win chance directly; commons are mostly money. See the full relic list and tier list.
- The Front Office (NBA and MLB only): before each fresh run you pick a GM. Each is a deal with a cost (The Arsonist strips legends for +$40, The Underdog GM caps every reel at 84 for +50% winnings, The Hard-Ass removes your mulligan for +$60...) plus a locked signature relic that never takes a bag slot. Standard Issue (no GM) is always available. Every GM clears the table at a similar rate (4.4% to 5.3% in testing), so pick the play style, not the "best" one.
- Manager's Cards: one-shot abilities keyed to your coach's tier, armed on the map before a fight. A Hall of Fame coach (+4/+5) unlocks 🔥 Set the Tone (+18% in Game 1) and 🧊 Ice Water (+8% in elimination games).
- Banners unlock after your first title and make the next run harder (I: every team +1 ... V: teams +5 and no Insurance for sale).
Overtime and IMMORTAL
Beat the Warriors and a 🌋 Overtime ladder opens with the same squad and the same one life: a shop, then the '92 Dream Team (101), a fork of 2004 Argentina (98, kills your momentum) or the 2008 Redeem Team (103, +12% in Game 1), then two fictional super-teams, Neon City Flight (106, −2 to your OVR) and The Pantheon (110, +12% in elimination games). Clear all four and the leaderboard shows 🌌 IMMORTAL. Fewer than one run in a hundred gets there.
The daily mode
Every day the whole world gets the same pre-drawn reels and the same boss, rotating through 16 all-time teams. Unlike the build games' daily challenge, GOAT Squad daily retries are unlimited: the reels are identical on every attempt, only the series dice change, so the daily is a pure STOP-timing and roster-building exercise. Your home screen tracks attempts and first-beat.
The leaderboard
A run posts only when it ends (a loss or a title). It is ranked by fights beaten, with Squad OVR as the tiebreak. Eight fights shows 👑 CHAMPION; Overtime fights add "+N OT"; twelve shows 🌌 IMMORTAL. Because only finished runs post and most people do not post their deaths, the board looks far friendlier than reality: the true clear rate measured across every run started is about 5%.
How the 5% win: priorities in order
- Squad OVR gap is everything. Every point is 4% per game and it compounds across seven games and eight series. A better draft beats every relic combined.
- Land a +4/+5 coach. Points now, and the best Manager's Cards later. 📋 Coach Carousel ($25) is the cheapest OVR in the shop when your coach is bad.
- Buy Training Camp early and often. $40 for +2 OVR on one player, up to +4 per player. On a starter that is +0.33 to +0.67 Squad OVR each, cheaper per point than anything else.
- Take rare relics that touch win%. 💍 The Ring, 🔥 The Microwave, 🚀 Fast Starters, 🧬 Team Chemistry. Skip money relics late; money you cannot spend before the Warriors is worth nothing.
- Reach +8 before layer 9. The Bulls are a 97 and the Warriors a 101. A 105 squad is unlosable against the Bulls and a coin-flip-plus against the Warriors; a 109 squad is unlosable against both.
- Buy Insurance at the layer-8 shop. If you cannot afford both Insurance and the last Training Camps, Insurance wins. It is the only thing that turns a lost Game 7 into a second roll.
- Do not fold at 3-1. Your odds jump 10 to 20 points and the cap lifts to 95%. Comebacks are designed to happen.
How the other editions differ
| Edition | Roster | Fight format | Comeback hero |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBA | 5 starters + 6th man (0.75) + coach | Best-of-7 | LeBron James |
| MLB | 11 seats on a ballpark (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF, P at 1.25, DH at 0.9, Manager); infielders can fill any infield seat and outfielders any outfield seat at −2; no duplicate players | Best-of-7 with box scores | David Ortiz |
| NFL | Football roster | One game per fight, decided by quarters won; the Ring-Chaser and Insurance work at halftime | Tom Brady |
| NHL | LW, C (1.15), RW, LD, RD, G (1.35), 4th line (0.8), head coach | Best-of-7 with real sudden-death overtime (about a fifth of games) | Mark Messier |
| Soccer | Full XI in a 4-3-3 | One knockout match: two halves, extra time, penalties; win chance is computed exactly from goal probabilities and has no floor or cap | None (extra time replaces the comeback rule) |
| UFC | You build one fighter: 8 attribute slots plus a Corner | Five rounds, finishes possible at any moment; even matchup wins 53% with a 42% finish rate; a −8 underdog still steals 15% | None |
The Front Office GM system is live in NBA and MLB; the other four editions use the older six-modifier picker (No Ghosts, Bench Mob, Head Start, Iron Five, Underdogs, Open Book).
Questions people ask
How do you beat the Gauntlet in GOAT Squad?
Build the biggest Squad OVR gap you can (each point is 4% per game), get a +4 or +5 coach, buy Training Camp early, take relics that raise win chance directly (The Ring, The Microwave, Fast Starters, Team Chemistry), reach at least +8 over the boss before the finals so the blowout lock protects you, and buy Insurance at the last shop.
Is the STOP in GOAT Squad random?
No. Reels cycle at a fixed 10 faces per second with no easing, the sequence is pre-drawn, and the button fires on press. With practice you can stop on a specific face.
What is the final boss in GOAT Squad NBA?
The 2016 Warriors, rated 101, in layer 10. The 1996 Bulls (97) are layer 9. Both are fixed; every earlier fight rotates each run.
What percentage of GOAT Squad runs win?
About 5% of runs started clear all eight fights, across every edition. Clearing the four Overtime bosses as well (IMMORTAL) happens in well under 1% of runs.
What does Insurance Policy do in GOAT Squad?
For $125, once per run, it rewinds to the game that ended your run and re-simulates the series from that point. It is the only way to survive a series loss.
Can I retry the GOAT Squad daily?
Yes, unlimited times. The reels are identical for everyone all day; only the series outcome is re-rolled per attempt.
What is Squad OVR?
The weighted average of your six players (the 6th man counts 0.75) plus your coach's mod and any flat relic boosts. It is not capped at 99.
