The short version
- Layers 1-3 and 5-7 are forks (two or three cities). Layers 4 and 8 are shops. Layers 9 and 10 are fixed: the 1996 Bulls (97) and the 2016 Warriors (101).
- Every fork fight is redrawn each run from a big pool, matched to the layer's difficulty band. Two or three sides are flagged ⚠️ ELITE: +2 rating and a bonus ability, but a 60%-relic spoils wheel with the team's stars riding it three times.
- Boss abilities edit the win formula: Bulls +10% in elimination games, Warriors +15% in Game 1, 2013 Heat switch off your momentum, 2016 Cavs +25% when down 3-1, 2004 Pistons a hidden −1 to your OVR. 🧿 The Antidote cancels the one you are facing.
- Beat the Warriors and Overtime opens: Dream Team (101), Argentina (98) or Redeem Team (103), Neon City Flight (106), The Pantheon (110). All four = 🌌 IMMORTAL.

The map
The Gauntlet is a vertical ladder. You climb one layer at a time, and on fight layers you choose a side. The other road is always the "safe" escape, but the ratings on both sides sit in the same band, so the real choice is usually the ⚠️ ELITE side (harder, better spoils) versus the plain side.
| Layer | Type | Default teams (rating) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fork | 2012 Bobcats (75) / 2014 Sixers (75) | Tank teams. A fresh draft should sweep. |
| 2 | Fork | 2016 Sixers (79) / 2009 Thunder (80) | |
| 3 | 3-way fork | 2004 Pistons (85, hidden −1 to your OVR) / 2001 Bucks (85) / 2005 Suns (86) | The Pistons' debuff never shows on the scoreboard. If you are close to the +7 lock, remember it counts against you. |
| 4 | Shop | First chance at Training Camp, Coach Carousel, Home Court Deed. | |
| 5 | Fork | 2011 Mavs (88) / 2008 Celtics (90) | The first real test for an un-upgraded squad. |
| 6 | 3-way fork | 2013 Heat (91, your momentum is switched off) / 2011 Heat (92) / 2019 Raptors (91) | Against the 2013 Heat you never get the trailing-team bonus, so a 0-2 hole is a real hole. |
| 7 | Fork | 1987 Lakers (93) / 1986 Celtics (94) | |
| 8 | Shop | Buy Insurance here if you have not already. | |
| 9 | Fixed | 1996 Bulls (97): +10% in elimination games | Never rotates. The Bulls get stronger exactly when you are one loss from dead, so do not plan on a Game 7. |
| 10 | Fixed, final boss | 2016 Warriors (101): +15% in Game 1 | Expect to lose Game 1. Momentum then works for you. A 109+ squad triggers the blowout lock and cannot lose. |
"Default teams" are what the config lists. In an actual run, every fight on layers 1 to 7 is swapped for a team from a much larger rotation pool within ±2 of the listed rating (widening to ±4 if the pool runs dry). The finals never change.
⚠️ ELITE sides
Each run, two or three fork sides (never fewer than two) are marked ELITE with a pulsing node. An ELITE team gets +2 rating and one bonus ability drawn deterministically from: +5% in elimination games, +10% in Game 1, or momentum immunity. In exchange its spoils wheel is 60% relics (against the normal 65 / 55 / 35% curve) and the beaten team's top three players ride the wheel three times instead of two. The 🐛 Advance Tape relic knocks every ELITE team back down by 2, and ⚠️ Bounty Hunter pays a bonus relic for beating one.
When to take the ELITE side: early (layers 1-3), when +2 on a 75 is nothing and the relic-rich wheel sets up the whole run. When to avoid it: layer 7, when a 96 with a Game 1 edge is a real chance to die one step from the finals.
Boss abilities, in full
| Ability | Teams that carry it | What it does | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elimination edge | 1996 Bulls (+10%), The Pantheon (+12%), some ELITE sides (+5%) | Extra win chance for them in any game where one side faces elimination. | Win in five. 💍 The Ring (+6% for you in elimination games) and 🧊 Ice Water (+8%) offset it. |
| First-game edge | 2016 Warriors (+15%), 2008 Redeem Team (+12%), some ELITE sides (+10%) | Extra win chance in Game 1 only. | 🚀 Fast Starters (+15% Game 1) or 🔥 Set the Tone (+18%). Or accept the loss and ride momentum. |
| Momentum kill | 2013 Heat, 2004 Argentina, some ELITE sides | Your trailing-team bonus (9% per game behind) never applies. | Lead from the start. 🧿 The Antidote. |
| Boss comeback | 2016 Cavs (+25% when they are down 3-1) | They get a huge boost when facing a 3-1 deficit. | Sweep, or close it 4-1. Never let them see 3-1. |
| OVR debuff | 2004 Pistons (−1), Neon City Flight (−2) | Your Squad OVR is reduced in the sim only; the scoreboard shows the raw number. | Build a bigger cushion. 🧿 The Antidote restores the full number, including for the blowout lock. |
Routing a run
- Layers 1-3: take ELITE, farm relics. Your draft is far above these teams. The extra relics and the triple-riding stars are the point of these fights.
- Shop 1: Training Camp on your best starter, Coach Carousel if your coach is below +2. A Home Court Deed (+3% every home game for the rest of the run) is worth it if you can still afford a Camp.
- Layers 5-7: play safe sides unless you are already +8. This is where under-upgraded squads die. If your OVR is not at least 3 above the listed rating, take the lower side.
- Shop 2: Insurance first. Then Camps until the money is gone. Cash you carry into the Bulls is wasted cash.
- Bulls: avoid Game 7. Their +10% elimination edge means a 3-3 series is worse than the raw numbers say. A 104+ squad is comfortable; 105+ is unlosable.
- Warriors: plan for 0-1. Their +15% Game 1 edge is a one-game problem. From Game 2 you get momentum. At 109+ the blowout lock makes it a formality.
Overtime (after the title)
Beat the Warriors and the run continues with the same squad, the same cash, the same one life:
| Layer | Team (rating) | Ability |
|---|---|---|
| OT shop | Last chance to spend. | |
| OT 1 | 1992 Dream Team (101) | |
| OT 2 fork | 2004 Argentina (98) / 2008 Redeem Team (103) | Argentina kills your momentum; the Redeem Team gets +12% in Game 1. |
| OT 3 | Neon City Flight (106, fictional) | −2 to your OVR in the sim. |
| OT 4 | The Pantheon (110, fictional) | +12% in elimination games. |
Clearing all four earns 🌌 IMMORTAL on the leaderboard. Against a 110 you need a 118 squad for the blowout lock; realistically you win The Pantheon by stacking every win-chance relic and card you own into one series. Overtime rungs were deliberately left untouched in the August 2026 rebalance: champion and IMMORTAL are two separate difficulty ladders.
The daily boss rotation
The daily mode picks its boss from a fixed list of 16, one per day in order: 1996 Bulls, 2017 Warriors, 1987 Lakers, 2001 Lakers, 1986 Celtics, 2013 Heat, 2016 Cavs, 2014 Spurs, 2023 Nuggets, 2008 Celtics, 1989 Pistons, 1994 Rockets, 2021 Bucks, 2011 Mavs, 2019 Raptors, 2004 Pistons. The cycle repeats every 16 days.
Other editions' ladders
- Soccer climbs from relegation-zone and bad MLS sides up through Sacchi's Milan (96) and Guardiola's Barcelona (100), then extra time unlocks a World Cup ladder ending on Brazil 1970 (108). Every fight is one knockout match.
- NFL fights are single games decided by quarters won; the Overtime ladder runs 1970s All-Decade (101) → 1990s (98) / 2000s (103) → Canton Callback (106) → Gridiron Pantheon (110). It is the hardest edition: in testing about 1.4% of runs won the title and 0.03% went IMMORTAL.
- NHL series include real sudden-death overtime (about 21% of games) and shootouts (about 9%).
- UFC replaces teams with fighters and series with five-round fights.
