Build a Baller tips: the mistakes that cost you OVR, and how the 110+ builds get made

Most builds lose five to ten OVR to the same handful of habits. Here they are, with the numbers.

Updated 2026-08-25Source: game codeOfficial

The short version

  • Fill the 1.2 slots (3-Pointer, Finishing, Playmaking) with your best cards; dump weak cards in Speed (0.9).
  • Frame is height only. Put a 7-footer there, never a guard. A legend big in Frame or Rebounding is worth more OVR than a star guard anywhere.
  • Boost is +6 in the slot you use it in: on a 1.2 slot that is +0.73 OVR, on Speed only +0.55. Never Boost a card you are putting in Speed.
  • Snag beats Re-spin whenever a neighbor is a legend, an era Prime, or a diamond in an open slot. Read the reel before you decide.
  • For awards: Defense 95+ for DPOY, Finishing and 3-Pointer for scoring titles, Clutch plus "Chase the ring" for rings, everything plus 90+ OVR for MVPs.

Building: the mistakes

1. Assigning by overall instead of by slot

The slot only takes the player's rating in that one attribute. A 96-overall center is a 60-something in 3-Pointer. Look at the slot preview number, not the card's headline.

2. Putting a guard in Frame

Frame is 50 + 3.6 per inch over 5'10". A 6'1" guard is a 61; a 7'0" center is a 100; Yao is a 122. Frame is where your tallest landed player goes, always, even if he is a common card. Height has no tier.

3. Wasting a diamond on Speed

Speed weighs 0.9, the lowest. A 95 in Speed is worth 0.86 OVR less than the same 95 in Finishing. Speed is the parking spot for the card you cannot use anywhere else.

4. Boosting the wrong card

Boost adds +6 to every skill slot of a live player. What you actually gain is +6 in the one slot you lock him into, times that slot's weight: +0.73 OVR on a 1.2 slot, +0.67 on a 1.1 slot, +0.55 on Speed, and nothing at all on Frame (Boost does not touch height). Boost a live star headed for 3-Pointer, Finishing or Playmaking. Legends and era Primes cannot be Boosted, so if the reel lands a legend you are not spending Boost on him anyway.

5. Re-spinning without looking left and right

The neighbor cards are visible on the reel. Snag takes one for the same cost as a Re-spin but with no randomness. The math: a Re-spin gives you a 4% shot at a legend and a 5% shot at an era Prime; a visible legend one spot over is a 100% shot.

6. Burning power-ups on slot two

Your average after two slots tells you nothing. The card that deserves a Re-spin is the one on slot seven or eight that would drag a 108 build down to 104. Hold Re-spin until the open slots are the important ones and the landed card is below your average in all of them.

7. Filling the easy slots first

Every landed card is a chance at nine slots while all are open and a chance at one slot when eight are filled. Fill the hardest slots early (Frame, Rebounding, Defense: the ones where only bigs and specialists score high) while you still have flexibility, and leave Speed and Clutch, which lots of players score well in, for the end.

The order of operations that produces 110+

Every build in the all-time top 60 sits between 111 and 116, and they look alike. The recipe, from the leaderboard data:

  1. Land two legend bigs and put them in Frame and Rebounding. Wilt, Shaq, Yao. This alone is roughly 240 points of slot value across two slots.
  2. Curry in 3-Pointer, Kyrie in Dribble, Wembanyama in Defense, Jokic or Magic in Playmaking, Brunson or Lillard in Clutch. All live cards except Magic; none of them needs a Prime.
  3. Giannis in Finishing, or any legend wing (Vince, Dr. J, Gervin, Kobe) who lands.
  4. Speed takes whatever fast guard is left: Nate Archibald, Jamal Shead, Fox, Iverson.
  5. Use Boost on whichever of Curry / Kyrie / Giannis you landed as a live card, in the 1.2 slot.

You will not land all nine in one build; the top players are re-running the game until the legend rolls line up. That is what a 116 costs.

Draft Mode tactics

Draft Mode deals eight players scored for one random open attribute. Two things make it stronger than the reel for learning: the hand is already sorted for the attribute, so you see who the true elites are, and 🎯 New Attribute lets you re-roll which slot the hand is for. Use New Attribute when the roulette lands on Speed early; you want hands dealt for the 1.2 slots while your best picks are still available.

Hard Mode and the daily

Both hide ratings until the reveal. The meta nine is the cheat sheet: Curry, Giannis, Kyrie, Jokic, Wembanyama, Wilt, Archibald, Brunson, Yao. In the daily, remember that the reel is identical for everyone, so the Ranks board already shows where the leaders put each card before your one attempt. About one day in seven is a "lucky" daily whose first spin is a guaranteed Diamond.

Building for a specific career

Longevity and counting statsFrame and Clutch extend the age ceiling (up to 41)Surgery at the Injury Crossroads adds a season; One last ride adds another

The Free Agency decision at 25

It is the most consequential choice in the career. Stay loyal gives a vote and performance bump and locks you to your team for good. Chase the ring moves you to a strong team, which feeds both the title roll and the MVP roll, at a cost in earnings. Max the bag is the reverse. For a Hall of Fame push, chase the ring; the automatic-induction thresholds are all rings and MVPs.

Reading the verdict

A Hall of Fame with a 99+ build shows 🐐 G.O.A.T. A career with huge totals but no Hall shows 🏀 Hall of Bucket-Getters: the compiler's badge, which is the sim telling you the build scored but never won. If you keep landing there, your Clutch and Free Agency choices are the problem, not your scoring.
